The $5,000 Kitchen Refresh That Looks Like $25,000

Updated

The average full kitchen remodel now runs well past $25,000, and most of that money buys things guests never notice. If your layout works and your cabinet boxes are sound, a refresh gets you 80% of the visual result for a fifth of the price. Here's where the money goes, in order.

Kitchen mid-refresh with cabinet doors removed and new hardware on the counter

1. Paint the cabinets — $200 DIY / $1,500–$3,000 pro

Cabinets are 60% of what the eye sees in a kitchen. Painting them is the single highest-impact move available. The catch: it's all prep — degrease, sand, prime with a bonding primer, then two coats of cabinet-grade enamel. Cut corners and it chips within a year.

2. New hardware — $100–$300

Handles and pulls are the jewelry. Swapping 1990s knobs for plain brushed pulls reads as "renovated" all by itself. Buy one sample first and check the screw spacing before ordering thirty.

3. Lighting — $150–$500

Replace the sad ceiling dome, add plug-in under-cabinet strips. Kitchens sell on brightness — it's the same rule that applies when prepping a house for sale.

4. Faucet — $120–$350

A solid pull-down faucet upgrades the sink zone instantly, and it's a very learnable DIY if the shutoff valves under your sink actually shut off. (Check that first. Ask us how we know.)

5. Backsplash — $300–$800

Last, not first — even though it's the fun one. A simple subway or picket tile in a neutral tone dates far slower than whatever is trending this year.

The order matters: cabinets → hardware → lighting → faucet → backsplash. It's impact-per-dollar, descending. If the budget runs out at step three, you still got the transformation. Run it backwards and you get a nice backsplash in a tired kitchen.

What a refresh can't fix

Bad layout, failing appliances, water-damaged cabinet boxes, or sagging floors — that's remodel territory, and remodels have their own golden rule: fix what's behind the walls before what's on them. The full sequencing logic is in the right order to renovate a house.
